Abstract
Approximately two thirds of the world’s energy consumption is wasted
as heat. In an attempt to reduce heat losses, heat exchangers are
utilized to recover some of the energy. The radiator is one of these
heat exchangers.
This project deals with the examination of a car radiator and to study
it in the heat transfer point of view. Pressure drop of air and engine
coolant as well as rate of heat transfer for specific flow rates of air
and engine coolant were calculated and tabulated
Conclusion
As we can see that the radiators is a heat exchanger that exchange heat with
air using tubes containing an engine coolant whether pure water or a mix.
This exchange was enhanced by the presence of fins and also by the
presence of a metal inside the tubes that makes the flow rates turbulent and
increases the heat transfer coefficient.
Radiator are very important heat exchangers, If anything goes wrong with
the radiator itself, such as a leak or broken hose, the operating temperature
of the car can reach a dangerous level within minutes. The engine must be
allowed to cool down naturally before the vehicle can be driven safely to a
mechanic.
